Following an invited competition, Langlands & Bell were commissioned to work with architects Squire and Partners, and engineers Kier London and Campbell Reith on the development of an office building at 111 Strand. The artists created a simplified version of the local street plan, carved into the Portland Stone panels forming the façade of the building. Their work draws attention to the formal structure of the building and surrounding streetscape, but transforms perceptions of this familiar environment by literally turning it on its side. This subtle yet distinctive façade places the building firmly on the West End map; it has become an exemplar within The City of Westminster for the integration of art within architecture.
