Modus Operandi was appointed to select an artist for a commission that would transform the life of the University of Aberystwyth’s main piazza. Following an invited competition, Mark Pimlott’s proposal La Scala was selected. Pimlott's work functions as both a large-scale sculpture animating this open space, and as seating for formal or informal use. The concrete structure with its slender supporting legs and open seating arrangement were critical elements in the artist’s vision, which was realised with the collaboration of the late engineer Nick Hanika and Price and Myers. La Scala's frequent use for formal events such as student plays and graduation ceremonies, and as a site for informal social activities has given new life and meaning to the space. La Scala has won a number of awards.
Mark Pimlott talks to Robert Preece about La Scala and gives further detail about his practice in The International Sculpture Centre Blog.
