Rather than creating a fixed monument for the renewal of Sefton Park, Olaf Nicolai proposed a new bus route after discovering that getting to the park by public transport was difficult. As part of the proposal’s development the artist researched how the needs of local people and visitors might inform the creation of the route. Nicolai also proposed a series of new bus shelters, which would promote cultural activities in the park.
The artist discussed how his proposal could be realised with Liverpool’s transport companies, yet despite great support from local residents and community organisations, the transport companies were unable to pursue the opportunity. For Nicolai this process revealed the complex issues and challenges of decision-making for cities and their infrastructure.
