Light Signatures created in Liverpool's Sefton Park, is a work by artist Andrew Holmes, programmed to evolve over ten years. It celebrates remarkable explorers and pioneers from different eras whose achievements have a relevance to Liverpool; signatures of Christopher Columbus, Carolus Linnaeus, James Cook and others materialise at dusk at key sites around Sefton Park's periphery. Projected in white light at a width of 20 metres, the signatures appear as if written on the ground.
The eight Victorian statues installed around the refurbished Sefton Park Palm House were the artist’s inspiration for these individuals’ signatures, their discoveries being hugely influential on the development of our knowledge and understanding of the natural world. Light Signatures is a contemporary response to our continued desire to mark such achievements.
The work is planned to transform over time. Each year local secondary school pupils select notable 20th and 21st century figures whose signatures replace those of the historical figures. Light Signatures is managed and maintained by Arena Housing Association.
This work is part of the Liverpool Housing Action Trust Public Art Programme, developed by Modus Operandi.
