Furniture designer Michael Marriott’s work predominantly utilises materials and objects such as plywood, baseball bats and kitchen utensils. The Means of Production scheme provided an opportunity for Marriott to develop work that was more ‘robust‘ and to develop his analytical approach towards design, considering the context and motivation for designing an object.
Marriott pursued a number of possible projects with architects and manufacturers. One example was Progettomoderno, a subsidiary of furniture company Pianca based in Italy. Following discussions over how Marriott's work might be developed as part of a new range of furniture, Marriott was commissioned to produce a range of prototypes. A further outcome was Marriott’s collaboration with architects DSDHA on the design of market stalls for the small market town of Castleford, Yorkshire in January 2004 as part of a competition.
This project is part of the Means of Production Initiative, led by Modus Operandi.
