The Birmingham Hippodrome’s redevelopment was launched in 1998. Having been funded through the Arts Lottery, a key condition was the commissioning of artists within the project. Modus Operandi was appointed to manage the selection of artists and curate the programme.
Following consideration of locations with maximum public visibility and benefit, three major commission opportunities were identified: the safety curtain, the Foyer and the façade of the theatre. Balraj Khanna was selected to create a work for the safety curtain and Liz Rideal produced two pieces; a glass wall for the side elevation of the theatre and a glass chandelier for the foyer.
